The 2001 U.N. World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance

WILD delegate speaking at WCAR, Durban, S. Africa
8/01
WILD delegate speaking at WCAR,
Durban, South Africa.

WILD focused on continuing our organizing of the Women's Caucus for the 2001 U.N. World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. Many delegates fear that the 2001 conference will have a much lower profile than the world conferences of the 1990s. WILD met with members of the U.S. Interagency Council on Women to urge them to take actions to include gender in U.S. preparations for the World Conference. We held three strategy sessions to meet with women from around the world who were attending Beijing + 5 and may have been unaware of the World Conference. Through this series of meetings, WILD reached out to a broad range of women's organizations dealing with a variety of ethnic issues in their countries -- as we went beyond a simple black/white praradigm when discussing race. We shared important information and developed strategies for future work.
