Conclusion

The United States has made great strides in achieving gender and racial equality for all its citizens. Unfortunately, as this paper has highlighted, there remain glaring gaps in the treatment towards, well-being of and justice for women of color in our society. In a world increasingly facing the conflicts and contradictions of globalization, the United States is a prominent leader and role model for equality, democracy and justice. Presentation of the U.S.’s initial CERD report will provide an opportunity to ensure that we are fulfilling our obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

• What steps has the U.S. government taken to gather disaggregated data on women from different racial and ethnic backgrounds?
• What steps have been taken to ensure that women of color in the United States receive all the protections afforded them under CERD?
